Common Abbreviations Found in Civil and Parish Records

French civil and parish records often contain abbreviations used by priests, clerks, and civil registrars to save space. Learning these common shortcuts can make historical documents much easier to understand.

Record Types

  • BMS → Baptêmes, Mariages, Sépultures (parish registers, pre-1792)
  • NMD → Naissances, Mariages, Décès (civil records, post-1792)
  • AD → Archives Départementales
  • RG → Registre Général (sometimes used in older indexing systems)
